When their car rolled up, all I could see was mounds of white tulle, her huge smile, and that glittering tiara, so I knew immediately we were going to have a marvelous session! She honestly looked like a princess when she stepped out of the car, and when she went up en pointe in that dress..WOW! When she changed into her 3rd, more casual look and we were on our way down to the beach, we came across a sitting area surrounded by the most beautiful bougainvilleas, that happened to match PERFECTLY with her headpiece, which is now a tradition to wear during quince in her family. We then ventured down to the beach and ended our session with some beautiful captures of her dancing as the sun went down. Miss J is driven and strong, as well as funny and creative. Her Mom and I hit it off immediately which made the whole shoot so much fun! Delivering her final album was the icing on the cake, it turned out gorgeous and it always makes my heart happy to know they have it to share with generations of flower headpiece wearing family members to come!

As World Ballet Day 2018 comes to a close, I thought it would be prime time to reflect on my session with some beginning ballerinas at the amazing studio, Kirova Ballet Academy in Hallandale Beach. This was the youngest class I have been invited to sit in on, and I can tell you, I don’t think I stopped smiling through out their entire session. The giggles, laughter and unabated enthusiasm to just dance was infectious. Freedom from any care, new friendships made while holding hands, bouncing curls and pointed toes, all a reminder to why the art of dance is so fulfilling to all the dancers I have had the pleasure of working with. Before there was auditions, and intensives..there was just that love to dance. Music and movement filling a every day void of wanting more. So I hope on this day, and every day for that matter, all the older dancers out there remember to just…dance…and laugh…and giggle…and make new friends! And thank your Mom, because I bet it was her dream before you even realized it was yours. She was the one perfecting that bun, for always having snacks and extra bobby pins at the bottom of her purse. And the one loving and watching and taking dozens of photos of you when you were young so you never forget that little beginning ballerina with a pink tutu and dimpled elbows.

I’ve loved watching Miss G grow as a dancer over the last few years. Her Mom is the director and owner at a fabulous dance studio, Astrid Audet Academy of Ballet in Fort Lauderdale, which Ive had the pleasure of working with for awhile. Not only do they have incredible talent there, but they also have a beautiful environment of family and support. So spending a afternoon with them both was really a dream. We used all Capezio leos and tutus and explored all over the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. Miss G was amazing to work with, powering through our session with beauty and grace! We shot at the Gardens till we were nicely escorted out, but continued to shoot locally till the sun went down. Her energy, and pursuit of perfection is inspiring, and I was happy to spend such a wonderful day with her and her Mom!

Vizcaya made for the perfect backdrop for Miss S and her classic costume and beautiful technique. Although it was a bit crowded we made our way around finding some stunning locations to highlight her and her amazing dancing. She was so sweet and soft spoken, and an overall just wonderful young lady to work with! I had a wonderful day exploring and getting to know Miss S and her equally kind and helpful Mom.

From the moment I met Miss J and her mom at the coffee shop, I knew they would be a blast to work with. We had incredible weather on the beach that day and Miss J was up for anything and gave me 100% throughout her shoot. She was a powerhouse, talented and determined. When I told her about a vision for a creative shot I had imagined, she was so trusting and excited to try it, and ended up being one of our favorites of the session! Miss J and her mom were so fun to hang with for the day, I really enjoyed every minute of it, and I hope they did too!

I met Miss C at a Bat Mitzvah I was shooting. And after speaking to her Mom for just a few minutes on the dance floor they agreed to show up at a session I had the very next day that I was short a dancer for. Who does that? I mean how wonderful was it to meet this insane dancer and her mother who would help out a stranger like that? I was instantly thankful and smitten by the ethics and outgoing personality of Miss C and her mother. Once the studio session was over I already was wanting to work with her again as soon as possible! I contacted her Mom shorty after to see if Miss C would like to help me think out of the box and create some gritty, moving, lyrical shots, which were out of my comfort zone. It was a terrific learning experience for me, having such a powerful dancer that had the patience and ability to collaborate with me on my crazy ideas, and I know she made me a better photographer after that day! So, once again…Thank you!
Miss C also puts in tons of volunteer hours to support Traveling Tutus Inc and is a Traveling Tutus Ambassador. This is an incredible organization that helps support education and the arts! You can visit her fundraising page here at: Traveling Tutus Inc. Any and all donations are very much appreciated!

There is something really magical that happens in the hallways of a dance studio. Not only do you hear talk of technique, or an upcoming class, but there is this wonderful feeling of friendship and sisterhood of girls that share the same passion and commitment for what they love. They do homework together, eat together, laugh and I’m sure cry together too. So while I love to have one on one sessions with my dancers, having a session that expressed the sisterhood I get to witness at the studios I work with was a great experience. The common thread of dance that holds them all together. The support and love they have for one another and the bond that has grown over the years, along with their technique. I loved this group of girls, all of whom I had photographed before individually. But it was different having them all together, joy, laughter, the essence of youth and all the wonderful experiences for them to come, and share…together.
One of my images was also shared by the amazing Pointe Magazine publication, with the #squadgoals. I say we nailed it girls!

She spent her birthday with me! How great was that? We had such a great time hanging at The Achemist, finding all sorts of unique little spots for us to photograph. Every single image reflects Miss A’s personality and individuality! She is so creative, fun, easy going and an amazing dancer. I couldn’t be more honored she wanted to spend her special day with me.

Her mom went above and beyond finding the perfect outfits for Miss A to wear at our beach session, so I was excited before we even started! She was fabulous to work with, and I had so much fun hanging out with her and her mom, laughing a lot and having a great time! We both did work hard to get that perfect water shot, which was worth every ant bite and braved everything from heat and crowds to beach stickers and a not so light rain in the middle of our session. Which we all made it through while laughing the whole time. As all troopers, we continued on and ended up having an amazing time and created some gorgeous images to remember our afternoon together.

We show up to a quite beach location scouted earlier that week, only to see we were not the only ones that wanted to go to the beach that day, it was PACKED. And while I admit it threw me off a little, Miss K handled it with calmness and security and overall professionalism. She didn’t even hesitate when asked to leap over and over again on a crowded boardwalk. Or go up en pointe while an seemly endless line of cars drove by. She was so confident and laid back, she really made me feel we were the only ones of the beach that day.
I’d seen Miss K dance at Astrid Audet Academy of Ballet and she always caught my eye for not only being a strong, technical dancer, but one that LOVES to dance! I mean it radiates on her face every time she performs, which in turn makes her even more exquisite to watch. She is so driven and talented, all while being humble and courteous and just lovely to work with.
